Spring 2026
In English, we have been continuing our super phonics - we even had a RWInc specialist in to see how well we are doing. We have been reading our next traditional tale 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' whilst developing our language with the 'Super Seven' wow words and writing about the characters and the setting. Can you remember any of our 'wow' Super Seven words?
In maths, we are developing our understanding of numbers to 10 by recalling some speedy doubles and looking at the numbers that can make 10. Can you play a dice game and see if you can collect items to make 10?
We continued to love our dance, forest fun, music, RE and especially our Science this week. We loved recalling our volcano explosions last term and did some interactive experiments with ice experiments this week - fun chilly stuff!
Then we very proudly got creative making some special card this week - it combined our creative talents and our love outdoor learning. We hope our special people at home will love them.
Spring 8 - Careers and World Book Day Week!
We have had so many amazing visitors in this week inspiring us with lots of adventures and jobs we could do in the future. After last weeks' Marine Biologist this week we learnt about being a Sea Navigator, a Farmer, a Geo Scientist, a History and Music Professor and a Radiologist. It has all been really inspirational and got our minds thinking about all the skills we need and all the amazing things we might like to do in the future.
There was lots of additional excitement this week as we had World Book Day too to celebrate as well as Beach School. As part of the Book Day celebrations we helped the Whole School write a joint adventure story, we designed book covers for it and enjoyed a book swap too.
Then we had our next Beach school day - a lovely way to celebrate World Book Day as we used out topic 'Once Upon a Time' to inspire our book love. We made houses for the 3 little pigs, explored different sizes thinking about Goldilocks and the 3 bears then made our own gingerbread people!
A wonderful week with lots of fun.
We had a wonderful assembly led by Blair Watson teaching us how to be a Marine Biologist and about the work he is doing locally. This was also a nice link to beginning our Careers week next week. Mr Moloney then taught us about the festival of Ramadam.
We are now working in groups for our phonics each morning so this is a great way to target the steps and next sounds we need to work on. We then all come back together for our English 'Drawing Club' and have made a great start learning our new 'Super Seven' vocabulary and descriptive writing for our core book of the week 'The Three Little Pigs'.
In maths, we have had fun recapping our doubles and using the Rekinreks to speedily make numbers. Any games that you can play with a dice at home will help build on this skill too.
We have loved beginning our new topic 'Once Upon a Time' learning about the features traditional tales have, completing our rainbow challenges and trying some art to enhance our topic. In addition, we have learning about Chinese New Year and enjoyed trying some traditions and learning skills to make Chinese dragons and even trying so Chinese writing.
Our final excitement this week was beginning dance - we absolutely loved learning warm ups, stretches and a dance routine about a chick that we look forward to showing you before Easter!
What a great way to start a new term.
We worked on our new short 'oo' and long 'oo' sounds with the rest of our previous Set 2 sounds ready for our RWinc check up for this term. We continued our Red RWInc reading as well as getting really good at our 'Super Seven' words for our core book 'Maisie Jones and the Dinosaur Bones'.
In maths, we did a bit of measure comparing length, height and even sorting time with a bit of ordering too for some sandwich making!
We enjoyed lots of assemblies this week including one from Ignite for 'Open the Book', a special day for Internet Safety Day and one all about being kind to ourselves and to each other for Children's Mental Health week. This inspired lots of activities for valentines including making cards and heart charms to share our kindness and help us feel good. Then best of all, we did our own assembly for the whole school and families. We were so good - learnt so many lines, facts and had fun art and songs to show and perform. We did ourselves proud performing it, it is such a brave thing to do.
We have been learning about time and sequencing events in time order. We made jam sandwiches and talked about the order we needed to do things then enjoyed our sandwiches at snack time!
We loved making volcanoes as our final thinking and learning about dinosaur extinction to end the topic.
Then with a bit more music, RE, Understanding the World, reading buddies... it really was a busy end to the term!
Have a good rest Alnwick Castle Class!
In maths, we have been looking at odds and evens, doubles and have been investigating to recognise and to begin to learn our doubles, including a double rap!
In our topic, we have looked at ammonites, fossils and pterodactyls. It was great to make our own fossil examples in forest school. We have enjoyed learning parts, stories and songs for our assembly and are looking forward to showing you next week!
In maths we ahve been thinking about our numbers again and looking really at depth. For example, that 7 is made on the 10s frame as a 5 + 2. We have been trying to speed at our recall of 'seeing' this and making numbers which has helped us with 'more and less'. You could play games with a two sets of dice and see how quickly you can identify and make these numbers if you would like extra practise at home.
In our topic, we have loved learning about Spinosaurus, learning about his environment and features. It has given us an opportunity to recap facts about carnivores, herbivores, omnivores and even paleontologists. We loved finishing our 3D dinosaurs and adding lots of extra bits for our assembly too.
Spring Week 1 - A snowy start
What a way to begin a new Spring term with so much snow. We spent lots of the day taking our learning outside from shape recapping, snowball counting and sorting and even beginning our new dinosaur topic by looking at prints in the snow. It was was also a great way to work on our independent skills of dressing and undressing with all our outdoor gear as well as enjoying the outdoor season!
We have then continued the week with 'wowing' everyone with all the sounds we can remember, beginning our new Red Read Write Inc Reading Books and writing about our holiday news. We have begun our dinosaur topic finding out what we already know and what we would like to find out about and reading lots of dinosaur stories including our Core Book - Dinosaur Roar by Paul and Henrietta Strickland.
There is going to be so much fun, Alnwick Castle Class - A great way to begin the new term.
