Music Intent Statement and Progression Map

Music Intent Statement

“Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our schools, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school.”- The Model Music Curriculum

At Hipsburn Primary School our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity and self-expression, encouraging children on their musical journeys. We hope to foster a life-long love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences. Our music curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in all areas of music.

We use the Charanga music scheme of work to ensure that our learners have access to a variety of music experiences as part of the curriculum. Music lessons are cross curricular and support deep transferable skills as well as learning and understanding in a range of many other subjects including English and Mathematics.

The aims of our Music curriculum are to nurture pupils who:

  •  Can sing and use their voices individually and in a groups
  • Can create and compose music on their own and with others
  •  Have opportunities to learn a variety of musical instrument and play together in ensemble groups
  •  Understand and explore how music is created and shared
  •  Listen to, review and evaluate the work of great composers and musicians from a range of genres, styles, traditions and historical periods
  • Have different opportunities to take part in performances

We have recently registered to become a singing school with Sing Up, putting singing at the heart of our school to deepen the children’s understanding of music as well as supporting personal and social development and wellbeing.

We are proud to offer violin, flute and guitar lessons as part of our extra-curricular program to give learners a range of opportunities to develop and use their musical skills. We hope to soon relaunch our school choir and once again proudly share our musical achievements with performance opportunities such as school plays, Alnmouth Arts Festival and the Alnmouth show.
