Physical Education Intent Statement
Curriculum Intent
At Hipsburn Primary School, we provide a high-quality PE curriculum that inspires all pupils from EYFS to Year 6 to enjoy being active, succeed, and excel in a wide range of physical activities. Our curriculum promotes the development of physical literacy, confidence and a lifelong love of movement. We support pupils to improve their health, fitness and overall wellbeing. Through engaging lessons and opportunities for both intra and inter-school competition, pupils build character and learn important values such as resilience, fairness, and respect.
The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
-
Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
-
Engage in competitive sports and activities.
-
Lead healthy, active lives.
Curriculum Implementation
Children are taught regularly by both teaching staff and specialist sports coaches from EYFS to Year 6. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in intra-school crew competitions at the end of each PE unit, numerous inter-school sporting tournaments, participation in active initiatives and after-school clubs.
Our Year 6 children have the opportunity to become members of the school sports organising committee (SSOC). These children receive specialist training and work to supervise and support the use of sports activities across the curriculum and during break times.
We aim for all children to achieve at least 60 active minutes each day, including active learning opportunities beyond their regular PE lessons. Our PE curriculum follows national curriculum guidelines and provides a broad, inclusive range of activities that challenge every child and support their ongoing progress. Each afternoon, EYFS and KS1 pupils enjoy playtimes with access to a variety of sporting equipment, while all KS2 pupils take part in the daily mile to promote fitness and wellbeing.
EYFS
The Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2025 states, ‘Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives’. Within the EYFS, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop their fine and gross motor skills throughout provision and within PE sessions. Pupils develop their core strength, balance, stability, coordination and agility through repeated and varied opportunities.
Key stage 1
Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils are taught to:
-
Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
-
Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
-
Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key stage 2
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils are taught to:
-
Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics].
-
Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
-
Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
-
Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Swimming
Each year group in Key Stage 2 will attend swimming lessons for one term, usually in Year 3/4.
