STEM- RAF glider challenge

Following the success of our rocket design workshop, Year 5 and 6 have taken on another RAF STEM challenge- this time to design and build their own gliders! The virtual session, led by RAF engineers, supported the children to develop their understanding of what a career in engineering can look like within the real-life world of STEM.

They were tasked with working in groups to design three different gliders and testing them to determine which design would travel the furthest distance. They identified the different forces that would be acting on the glider- lift, thrust, weight and drag- and then considered how to create a design that would increase the balance, stability and speed of their prototype.

With a winning distance of 7.8 metres, we certainly have some impressive engineers!

Road to RIAT STEM Day  (January 2023)

Year 5 and 6 had a super day working as engineers during a virtual live STEM day led by the RAF.
During the morning session, we took on the RAF Space Challenge: as RAF engineers, we were tasked with designing and building rockets whilst learning about the process of designing, creating, testing and improving. Our scientific experiments involved testing launch angles and payloads.
In the afternoon, everyone worked on their competition entries for designing a sustainable aircraft for the future and we are very excited about the innovative and creative solutions that were explored!
