Autumn 2023
More Special Visitors
This linked in really nicely about how we need to look after ourselves and one another, how we can keep ourselves safe but then what to do if we don't feel very well or get hurt.
They reminded us of the importance of washing our hands so we sung the hand washing song to them. Then they talked about having immunizations and drinking lots of water to stop us getting ill. We also learnt how to cough into our elbow rather than our hand.
We had lots of fun using the stethoscope to listen to our heart, torches to check our eyes and then we even had a go using bandages. There were lots of operations going on bear Simon and Suzy as we talked about it should only be a properly trained Nurses or Doctors who should do these things normally.
We thought about the importance of being safe and felt inspired but our amazing nurses that do lots of things to help look after people.
It was so much fun but we did think about the importance of being safe with fire, only letting an adult deal with fire, how to watch for hazards and then what we should do in a real emergency. We finished later that day practising a fire drill at school and a fantastic story about firefighters. What mini little firefighters in the making we have!
What a wonderful way for us to learn about our Superheroes / People who help us with a special visit from the actual police. We were so lucky to have Community Officer Sophie and Constable Darren in for an amazing session and they had so much to tell us about!
We learnt about where they work, how they travel, what they do and all about their uniform and equipment. We got to try lots on and ask so many questions. We feel very lucky that they help look after us and we know that if we were in an emergency we should call '999'. Sophie also reminded us about road safety week and it was a perfect opportunity for us to recap how to be safe around roads. We will be going over this a little more on Friday as they come and visit the rest of school as part of our road safety awareness week.
We had such a wonderful time and the most excitement was when we went to visit their car outside and all the lights and siren came on.
Thank you for our visit, Alnwick Police.
Children in Need - Friday 17th November
We began our morning with Pudsey Bears special fundraiser story and also read a little story about two special children called Tiernan and Zara. They attend a special centre for children with Down-syndrome and some of the money we raise helps to fund resources for the centre and supports their families also.
We then read a story titled ‘My Friend Isabelle’ about a little girl with Down-syndrome and her best friend Charlie. This is a wonderful story that encourages us to think about why friendships are special, and how our differences make the world more interesting.
Next it was time for pudsey crafts which included finger painting and puppets. We also decorated our very own pudsey bear with yellow beads and squeezed food colouring onto a giant Pudsey bear; this was our favourite activity and what a great way to strengthen those small hand muscles.
After lunch we headed outside for a bear hunt around the forest then came back inside to make jammy bear sandwiches.
It really has been a day to remember.Today we have been learning about Diwali.
We read a story about a little girl called Ariana and her brother Rafi who celebrate Diwali with their family, before discussing the meaning of Diwali.
We discovered Diwali is a Festival of light over dark and good over evil.
The festival lasts for 5 days and the Hindu people celebrate with fireworks, dancing, yummy food and exchanging gifts.
We had fun making Rangoli patterns on a tuff tray using jewels and discussed their colours, sizes and shapes.
We have been strengthening our small hand and finger muscles squeezing pegs to place on the corresponding numbers to the Diwali pictures.
We also began creating our own diya lamps using our super fine-motor skills to decorate them.
The children had so much fun learning about a different culture and we will continue our topic throughout the week.
In particular, we talked about being seen especially as the days get darker, how to walk safely near roads (on the path, with an adult and away from from the curb) and finally how to cross the road safely. We practised 'STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK!'
We always like to think of how to keep ourselves safe as well as each other so it was a perfect reminder and a wonderful way to show our knowledge and respect to an outside visitor.
